Reading is one of the most important elements in my daily life. Right now I'm in the middle of 3 books.
* Demon Loard of Karanda by David Eddings -- Audio book that puts me to sleep in less than 15 minutes almost every night.
* Urban Shamen by CE Murphy -- Audio book. I listen as I drive or pull weeds in the day.
* Magic of the Wood House by Cassandra Gannon -- Total fluff. Really fun fluff. I'm whizzing through the complete series.

Even in my life-busiest time of life, I have always been reading at least one book. I cannot imagine not being in the middle of reading something. Some of my best memories in life are tied to the book I was reading at the time. My first visit to Hawaii is tied to the first time I read Robin McKinley's Sunshine.

I had an enlightening conversation recently. I'm a fast reader. Well, fast compared to my mother and husband, both of whom have read over my shoulder. I consistently read faster than them. Until I met one of my best friends, who absentmindedly demonstrated that she leaves me in the dust. I once read in a room with her... She read 3 pages to my 1 page. I have been jealous of this ability of hers for years. But recently I was talking to her about what she is reading. "I don't really have time for reading right now." What?! But she likes reading and reads so much faster.... I wasn't understanding. Further questions revealed something I never imagined. My friend never stops in the middle of a book. NEVER. When she sits down to read a book, she always finishes it. So if she has insufficient time to read an entire book (say 10 minutes instead of an hour), she won't read because it is not enough time.

I have to admit that I've been processing this down side to reading fast for a few weeks. I spoke about it to a mutual friend of ours.... Who said... that she does the exact same thing. What?! They both read so quickly that they cannot imagine personally stopping in the middle of a book. So they don't even pick up a book that they cannot finish in a single sitting.

This different view of how reading works is so alien to me... I have almost entirely flipped from envy at being able to read so quickly to pity that they miss out on living a life constantly in the middle of a story. They both looked at me with the same expression in their eyes. They know other people stop in the middle of books and stories. It just is not something they do. And they have no inclination to change. And as they both may read this post... *wave* Thank you for making me grateful for the way my brain works.

I read scifi, fantasy, romance, and a bit of mystery. I like a well-written kids book, and I do not mind "historical" attached to the front of my genre. I like my books to be fiction and reasonably well written. Lately, I have noticed that I tend toward books that are a mix. Fantasy romance or scifi romance... Some people ask me for recommendations. So, here are some thoughts.

These tend to mix romance with something else.  )

Gifted by Joss Whedon, an X-men graphic novel, came well recommended.  I was an enthusiastic X-men reader from the late 80s to the mid-90s.  I do not read much of the recent stuff, and when I randomly pick up a comic now I feel lost.

But this one.... I liked it.  Well done.  It didn't make me feel like I had to read 20 other things to figure out what they were talking about.  It very nicely referenced very old story-lines without making them intrusive.    And it was a pretty good story.  Wow!

Sci-fi with just a tasteful hint of romance.  Female protagonists.
