Sci-fi with just a tasteful hint of romance.  Female protagonists. 

Patricia Briggs is the author.  I read Moon Called and The Hob's Bargain.  Both quite good reads. She reminds me a lot of the best of Robin McKinley (although not quite as good as Sunshine, we really cannot expect that more than once every 10 years or so).  I'm thrilled to read that Moon Called is the start of a series, though it was fine just as it was.
