Gifted by Joss Whedon, an X-men graphic novel, came well recommended.  I was an enthusiastic X-men reader from the late 80s to the mid-90s.  I do not read much of the recent stuff, and when I randomly pick up a comic now I feel lost.

But this one.... I liked it.  Well done.  It didn't make me feel like I had to read 20 other things to figure out what they were talking about.  It very nicely referenced very old story-lines without making them intrusive.    And it was a pretty good story.  Wow!
