indigo_rose99: (tell the truth)
One of my friends is finally converting from palm to android. No making fun! Many days I still miss my palm. But there are perks. And I figured that in my near future will be making a list of my favorite apps for her. So, here we are.

I have a Note II and a Xoom, and in many cases I like the same apps on both. But not everything.

I like on both phone and tablet:

  • Note Everything -- For my notes. I paid for Pro version so I could lock some notes. I love that my notes are not on the cloud.

  • File Manager -- Allows me to navigate through the files on the droid as if it were windows explorer. Really handy when I am trying to find a specific file, or wondering if I actually have a file.

  • Moon+Reader -- Book reader. I mostly read *.epub files on it, but it reads other formats. Scrolls. Modify the bright/dark. Day vs night button. Flexible to font size and color. My absolutely favorite book reader. With Pro, has TTS. And the TTS has a sleep setting (= stop after a certain amount of time).

  • Business Calendar -- The default Google calendar is ok. But.... I am a HUGE calendar user. And the default calender would not allow me on my phone to create a short term repeating event. Something that would repeat for 5 days, for example, but no longer. Business Calendar (there was a free version for me to try out) not only allowed that (worth the $$!), it also has a bunch of other cool features that I discovered over time.

  • Alchemy -- Game. Puzzle where you combine elements to create other things.

  • Set -- Game. Yes, like the card game.

  • Robo Defense -- Game. Tower defense. Strategy in preventing the robots from crossing the screen. There is a free version if you want to try it out.

  • Skype -- To log into Skype from wherever I am.

  • ElJay -- Yes, to access and post to LiveJournal.

  • RealCalc -- My favorite calculator. I still miss the easy Palm V button for a calculator.

  • Opera Mobile -- Browser.

  • Astro Player -- Plays a wide variety of audio files.

  • Plants vs Zombies -- Game. Tower Defense. Not as flexible or replayable as Robo Defense, but very pretty. I had to buy it off of Amazon Apps, which was a pain.

  • Bonsai Blast -- Game. Shoot colored bubbles.

  • Drive -- Link to Google Drive, which allows me to share documents. I can even edit them offline.

  • Google Reader -- To read my RSS feeds. Which will be going away soon. No, I have not managed to find a replacement I can live with. Hate the first five replacements I tried. Still working on it.

Phone only:

  • Sleep as Android -- My wakeup alarm. Can be set to do a gentle early wakeup when it notices that I am moving around. Makes cool graphs of my sleep activity (very impressive to engineers and other statisticians). Confirms whether I slept well by telling what percentage of the time I was in deep sleep.

  • Stopwatch & Timer -- Because I like setting timers for stuff.

  • Unit Converter -- Converts temp, volume, etc.

Tablet only:

  • Brightness: A button to quickly change the bright/darkness settings of my screen

  • Grave Defense HD -- Game. Tower Defense. Did not install it on my phone because I was afraid of spending ALL my time playing it.

  • Grave Defense HD Free -- Game. Tried it on my phone, but it was using too much of my mobile monthly download. What on earth could it be downloading every day that would take up so much space and time?! So, tablet only.

  • Night of the Living Dead Defense -- Game. Tower Defense. I might be in a rut.

Me: <GPS on, address programmed>  Droid, take me to the car repair place!

Droid2: OK!

Me, driving: Um... Why aren't you talking?

Droid2:
I can't find satellites.

Me, trying to only look at Droid2 while at a light: But you found it earlier!  You said you were ready to go!

Droid2: I lied.

Me, now making the first serious turn: Um, I need directions on what to do next...

Droid2: BUZZ

Me: What does "buzz" mean?

Droid2: <rebooting>

Me: How can you be rebooting at a time like this?!  Well, crap.  I hope this next light takes a while....

Droid2: Ok, I'm back!

Me, frantically opening up maps and address again while at light: Take me to the car repair place, as previously specified!

Droid2: OK!

Me, driving: Why aren't you talking?

Droid2: You know that turn back there?  You turned left.  You should have turned right.

Me, still driving: Yes, I know.  I didn't want to take the interestate. I wanted to take the back road.  So, recalculate already and tell me what to do next.

Droid2: You should have turned right.

Me, looking frantically for another light or a place to pull over: I didn't WANT to turn right!  I'm here now, what do I do?

Droid2: You should have turned right.

Me: Yes, but what NOW!?!

Droid2: Go back to the light and turn right this time.

Me: Where am I?  What do I do at this light?

Droid2: Fine.  You are not going to do what I say?  I'm turning off now. <black screen>

Me: I hate you.  Do I still have a paper map in this car?

I hate it.  Hate the stupid piece of electronics.  All of the things I do frequently are harder or near impossible.  It has been one month, nine days.  I have not adjusted.  I have not accepted.  Hate. Hate. Hate.

Sadly, it turns out that the expensive insurance T is paying does not cover me stomping the stupid thing into tiny little pieces.

However, I love my husband. And seeing me trying not to smash the piece of electronics whose brother he loves...  It makes him unhappy.  He is suggesting that I go for another brand, like a Palm Pre or whatever comes out next...  *roll eyes*  Given the way iPhones seem to share many of the characteristics that I despise about this Droid2, I cannot imagine that any current piece of technology is going to do the things I want.  All current phone/PDA technology aims at doing activities I am uninterested in or actively turn off for security reasons.

So a sliver lining is a difficult thing to come up with.  But here is my list:
  • Set -- Yep, it's a game. And I love the card version, so having one I can practice electronic is nice.
  • Moon+Reader -- I found a book reader I do not hate. It scrolls.  I have not figured out how to dependably change the within-reader screen brightness or delete read books.
  • FBReader -- Another book reader I do not hate.  I can change the screen brightness. However, it does not scroll.  And I still cannot delete books from within the reader.
  • Connectivity -- Sometimes it allows me to move on with my life and not bother checking email because the green light is not blinking.  On the bad side, it delivers email (with a buzz or beep) at 3am.  *sigh*
  • Sleep -- On the advice of an iPhone user, I went searching for sleep apps.  I found one that is an alarm clock that can be tailored to wake me before my alarm, when I'm already in the process of waking up.  Something about tracking my movement when I sleep?  This is actually pretty cool. And one of its features is putting my phone in airplane mode when I actually put it down to sleep.  So no more being woken up by those 3am spam emails...
*sigh*  That was as good as it gets.  Just a few of the many things I hate... )

As I have gone through website after websearch attempting to understand the vagarities of my new piece of unwanted technology, I learned a new term.  "Cloud."  I read it on android forums for the first time last week.  Now I see it in TV ads, hear it on the radio...

Evidently I am simply behind in the latest geekspeak.  Or perhaps I was living a more data-secure life than the newest technology easily allows.

My data is in the cloud?  Ugh.  Yet another aspect of this stupid thing I hate.
