* Airborne, and lots of it. I felt like a cold was starting up before I left and packed 6 tubes of it. I'm down by two.
* LL Bean travel alarm clock. Packs small, easy to find the time with, doesn't tick, works perfectly as a classroom clock. Tells the temperature. LOVE it.
* LL Bean travel slippers. Who exactly has been walking on these hotel floors? With what on their shoes? *shiver*
* Ginger. At worst, it is a nice snack or addition to tea. At best... It its worth more than its weight in platinum.
* Dark chocolate covered coffee beans. Better than coffee for waking me up, and doesn't give me the stomach problems I sometimes get from local coffee. I ran out two days ago. *sniff*
* Air filled lumbar support pillow from REI. Fills itself, rolls up when packed. On those long or no-pillow planes, it makes all the difference in my sitting comfort.
* Travel packets of woolite, with sink stopper. For when I'm on a 3 week trip (like now) and only packed 1 week of clothing (like now) and the hotel has pissed me off too much to pay them for their laundry service (like now). I can wash them in the sink and hang my clothes in the shower. Or like when I write with purple ink on my pale shirt, I can leave it soaking in woolite in the sink overnight....
* ziplock bags. Snack and quart size, empty. They can become ice packs (check), food bags, jewelry bags, keeping liquids in checked luggage from ruining clothing... and much more that you will not be able to imagine in advance of your trip. I packed extra and really appreciated it!
* Random small containers of over-the-counter cold medication.
* Music. In whatever form -- computer, mp3, CD. Music makes the world a more friendly place, I'm not sure why.

And yes to music. Oh yes. Cannot bear to be without. Even if you don't listen that much on your trip, it's vital for those real culture shock moments. I was in France about 12 years ago and I was stuck in a train station for way too long and there were armed storm troopers everywhere (bomb scare) and every announcement was repeated in six different languages over and over and over and I was tired and thank GOD I had a CD player and headphones with me. I popped in some loud American rawk and felt much better almost instantly. Having music with you is like bringing home along!

I usu travel with extra plastic bags from the grocery. I always wrap my shoes. Also good for laundry and I have used them as an ice pack in a pinch. Zip locks would be good, too.
I tried the pack-blouse-in-dry-cleaner's-bag trick on my last trip. It really did minimize wrinkles. I tossed it at the hotel, since I planned to wash the blouse when I returned anyway. I am all about underwear, socks, and even shoes that I can discard to save packing on the homeward trip. I set aside any of these items that are almost dead and pack them on my next trip. If I am in a "underpriveledged" place, I try to set shoes beside the trash can rather than in it to suggest that the cleaning staff is welcome to have them. I figure that good-brand sneakers might be appreciated, even if they are "old" to me.
