Giving up

When is the appropriate time to give up on previously discussed social engagements?

Today (Friday) is Robert Burns Day in Glasgow.  There have been signs about it for days now.  [profile] thereisnomagic encouraged me to ask my students about their plans.  I did, and one of them is hosting an out-of-town work guest this week.  She offered to have me join them tonight, going out. I accepted, getting the feeling that this was a more-the-merrier situation.  That was Tuesday.

I did not hear from her on Wednesday.  Or Thursday.  Or at any time today.  I left a note for her before I left work today, telling her my hotel and room number and encouraging her to call with plans.  I got back to my hotel by about 4:30pm.  I have no active cell phone.

By 5:30pm I was bored.

At 6pm, I shrugged and decided to go out for a walk.  I walked about town and picked up a few food items for dinner.  I was half expecting there to be a message for me when I returned to my hotel room.

But when I returned at 7:30pm, no message.

So now I'm eating my dinner, drinking from the bottle of wine [profile] thereisnomagic helped me find and thinking...  When should I have given up?  Europeans tend to eat later than I am comfortable.  I am not even sure where the Texan line is on this point.  My gut says that if she calls after 8pm, that is rude of her.  Is that really true?  Perhaps there is some knowledge about Robert Burns Day that I lack.  Checking websites....  Nope.  Nothing time-wise I can determine.   And now that I read them, the website descriptions of Burns Night sound pretty awesome!  I'm really regretting missing them.
