There is a name for this?
Oct. 25th, 2006 06:34 pmI'm taking a facilitation class this week. Three days of listening to the official correct way to do my job. Which is way more useful than it sounds, since I mostly taught myself this stuff.
One of the topics was types of listening. I think they were titled "Active" vs "Empathic." The context the instructor gave was coming home to your spouse, who has had a really long, hard day. Your spouse starts to talk about his day, do you say
(a) "Well, did you try...?"
(b) "That is terrible, honey! So, what did you do then?"
I interrupted the instructor as she was suggesting the wrong answer (to prove her point) to push the correct one. My knowledge was learned through long, painful experience in an actual relationship. Evidently this sort of thing can also be learned from a book or in a classroom. *general glower at the world*
...But I'm sure I never would have had it etched so well into my brain by reading it in a book.
