Last Friday when T pulled me away from work at 5:30 I decided that my wrists really needed an evening away from the computer. So, no work on taxes. He took me to dinner (to get me out of the house, I suspect) and then went off to spend time with his friends as he does every Friday. So I took on several tasks I have been avoiding for months and years.

  • I pulled out all of our silverware. Low grade Oneida. Documented and bagged it up for donation. If you are interested and local, let me know quickly. It is a full set.

  • Pulled out my parent's rose silverware. Midgrade oneida from many decades ago, in a rose pattern. Much sturdier than mine. With more of everything, plus ice tea spoons. It was originally two sets, now reduced by time to about a set and a half. And unlike what we have been using, they have not rusted or degraded in spite of being in a drawer for  10 years. They look quite quaint to my modern eyes. And all of the spoons are smaller! T seems dubious, but I like that part.

  • Went through everything on my paperwork shelf. Shred! Trash! File!

  • Pulled out my sorta junk drawers and went through them. Filled a trash can. Found letters that I think were given to me as a gift at our wedding (by a friend, not T). Weird! Got rid of 30 year old makeup.

Saturday we went to the gym (Because we go every day. Ugh.). Lunch was with C and her daughter. Daughter was surprisingly well behaved, for being a small demon (her mother's stories, not mine!). Then we went to fill in the gaps made apparent by our cleaning and organizing. Funnel, tea strainer (not ball!), silverware organizer (because the old one is (a) pink (b) too small to fit the rose silverware), decent can opener.... Pizza and Bab5 with friends finished the day.

Yay, rose silverware looks really awesome in our new bamboo cutlery organizer!

Sunday we did not go to the gym. Ok, so NOT every day. We had brunch with friends at a new we-buy-local place. Grocery store for copious amounts of ginger ale fixings and food for the week. Then we napped. Because eating and walking a grocery store are exhausting! When we woke there was just enough time to sit on the porch to allow the cat to enjoy our laps before meeting Dad for dinner. After dinner, there was massive quantities of juicing for my ginger ale. I had to clean the strainer 3 times (or was it 4?)!! The juicer is excellent, but ginger tends to fill up the strainer bits quickly.

Monday and today I have enjoyed looking in the silverware drawer every time I pass by. Why didn't I do this sooner?

I don't believe in New Years resolutions. Not that I don't think other people try to make them, but... I don't remember ever thinking that they were attainable. Kinda like Santa Claus. I don't remember ever believing in him. It was a story that supposedly some people believe. But I never did.

In spite of this, I have given in to the organizing craze. Every time I go through the mail or listen to ads, I hear how organizing my house can improve my life. Not that my life and house is disorganized. But... I did hear the call.

Specifically, for my travel drawers. I keep four drawers of travel stuff. Two shallow, two deep. The shallow ones are easy -- I can pretty much see everything in them. But the deep ones? I lost the bottoms ages ago. On my last few trips, I found it hard to pack the "of course I will want this!" stuff because I could not FIND it. Everything was in one of the drawers, but digging it out... So, I gave in to Container Store's ads, measured, and went looking. After two weeks and two trips, everything is in cute little plastic containers (some in layers of containers -- how cool is that?!) and I can actually either see or reasonably easily access it all. Whew!

Varying the containers sizes seemed the biggest thing to me, and going vertical at every chance was key. I would include pictures, but... You know. You knowing that I have lego cars, maps, plug converters and rubber bands? Not necessary.
