driving out there is scary

indigo_rose99Last week T and I were driving around town on regular streets (ie not interstate). There were two cars in front of us (one directly in front, one in the right lane, but side by side ahead of us), probably 90's mid-grade cars in not-too-hot shape. I was reading to T, and so didn't notice much when the car in front of us switched to the right lane (in front of the other car). But then there was screaming and honking. T said they had been yelling at each other when they were side by side. I did notice when we all pulled up to a light and at least one of them screeched to a pretty scary halt (no other traffic beyond the 3 of us). I mostly noticed that the driver's door of the back car opened as we slowed to a stop at the light. No one got out. I was waiting... So I got a terrific view as the front car turned on his reverse lights... and backed into the car behind him. Twice. Then turned right at the light and sped away. A guy stood on the sidewalk waving his arm after the car pulled away. T explained that this was the passenger from the back car, who I had never noticed getting out. ...Backed into the car behind him. Deliberately. *sigh*
This evening T and I were walking into Fry's and in the parking lot in the row of cars next to the one we were walking down, I saw a white car speeding toward the store. I said something about it T and then... the shouting began. As we watched, a guy started screaming at the now-stopped white car, pounding at it... It seemed like he reached through the window and started hitting the driver, saying something about speeding, and "trying to hit me" and other scary things. T said he thought it would be resolved quickly because they both had women in their cars, and the outside guy's woman was yelling at him from his own car. He had gotten out of his own car to make this assault on another driver?! The people in the parking lot just... froze. The car being hit upon sped by us before we made it in the store.
I realize that two data points do not make a trend. I guess I'm saying that if this kind of event is frequent enough to spill over into my visible life... There is no getting away from it. People are going insane in here.
