Upon questioning, "gross" cider has about 4% alcohol, but "soft" cider" has about 2% alcohol.  Soft cider is also a bit sweeter.

Upon tasting, gross cider is only slightly less nasty than beer.

Mmmmm, french cider

It is very sad to me that you have found french ciders that are not nice. I have tasted a number of these and liked them all. The French who excell at cider are the Normandes et les Bretagnes. There, the cidre sparkles and tastes a fair bit like mild wine.

If I recall correctly, you liked the cherry brandy in Denmark. Have you tried Calvados? It's another apple-based french liquor that drinks very much like brandy.

I did like the cherry brandy in Denmark. I have never tried Calvados. I'll keep an eye out for it.
