Expanding my horizons
Sep. 13th, 2007 12:49 amI went to a bar and watched the Scotland-France football game.
Yes, I know, this is deeply shocking. Completely unlike me.
Really, my students talked me into it. Two Scottish guys, two French guys, with the verbal competition going all week. They have been talking the game up, with bets! I know that if France (the favored one) lost, that the French enthusiast has to speak only English for the rest of the class. *laugh* Plus... I was pretty sure when I agreed to go that there would be free dinner at a really nice restaurant involved.
So mostly I watched my tablemates. Soccer does not interest me. They barely noticed when I pulled out a book. *duck/laugh*
This morning according to the website I just checked, Scotland won (I left before the final score). This was described to me last night as something like David beating Goliath. Class today is going to be interesting (in a good way, I hope). I may have to move people around from table to table because they are not speaking.
Later note: I finally got around to asking the Scottish guy what he had to do if Scotland lost: Speak French for the rest of the week. This is more amusing after you realize two things: (1) I am the instructor, and I do not understand French. This would have made communication even more challenging than his accent currently does. (2) He doesn't speak French.
