Last night I attended an exhibit opening at the Cold War museum. The exhibit was about a lost US bomb, curated by my friend J. The museum itself is a bunker -- Diefenbunker. I got a private tour of four floors, much of it restored to its 1960s cutting-edge glory...
This is the now not-secret bunker where Canada planned to stash its politicians in case of nuclear attack. It was intended to be self-sufficient for 30 days.
I rather liked the idea that it was so secret that politicians were not actually taken there when they ran drills. Politicians were taken to a dummy location (and not told it was dummy).
The place was actually manned 24-7 for many years, just in case. J said there were weird competitions on how long a person could stay down there. Understand that the rooms are tiny and mostly shared. No windows, no sunlight. I got claustrophobic just walking through!
