Got another bill from AT&T for another 3 months of not calling anyone. This is odd, because I have clear records of canceling my AT&T long distance when I got the last bill.
So, I called them. They said (in spite of my courtesy call on Dec 18 canceling my service with them, and signing up with someone else) that they still had me as their customer. So, according to them, I'm paying two companies for long distance I'm not using?! *expressions of disgust*
They said that they could offer me a deal where they charge me $0.35/min if I make a phone call and nothing otherwise. I pointed out that this is what I requested in December and was denied. "Oh, that was the legacy AT&T. This is the new AT&T." Huh?
My favorite was, "If you had actually been canceled, there would have been a fee. We charge for that. Since there was no fee, you were never canceled from AT&T long distance."
I accepted AT&T's offer. I asked about deleting the $18.20 bill I was holding, but "that is from the legacy AT&T. I'm with the new AT&T. I can't even see that bill in my records." *grinding of teeth*
Called Centurytel (the people I had supposedly been with for the last 3 months) and canceled (and talked them into returning the random fees they had been charging me for the past 3 months) my long distance with them.
Called AT&T back to address the $18.20. Got "Joshua", who spoke English with a very distinct accent and seemed to completely fail to understand me. I explained my 3 years of history, then waited while he verified. He verified, and decided that I wanted to cancel. *exasperated look* Not listening, huh? I explained that I just wanted the $18.20 to go away, since I had been under the impression that I had canceled with AT&T, and therefore should not pay it. "But you didn't cancel on Dec 18th. Therefore, you are charged for the last three months." *grind teeth* I once again, explained slowly that it is AT&T's fault that they believe I did not cancel, not my fault. Therefore I should not own fees for a service I was unaware I had, and had never asked for. And, in fact, had taken pretty extreme steps to reject when I was informed that it had been forced upon me! I asked if he truly understood me. I asked for his manager. I asked to speak to someone else who speaks better English. He put me on hold. Twice. He finally came back and offered me a confirmation number. Then he tried to upsell. I asked for the confirmation number. He pushed the upsell. I asked for the confirmation number and told him (AGAIN) that I was not interested in other products. After the sixth request, he gave me the confirmation number. I asked what this is confirming. He told me that it is a refund for the $18.20 (whew!) and promptly went into yet another attempt to sell me DSL. I think I actually hung up on him.
This entire process took approximately 2.5 hours of my life.

Date: 2007-03-16 03:03 pm (UTC)The "legacy AT&T"? Didn't someone tell them that they were broken up into Baby Bells in 1982? What a dumbass.
I really want to get away from these guys, but I can't convince R to change to Verizon. I may tell him again this weekend.
