I changed my long distance today.

When I got back from England, the stack of mail was almost a foot tall.  T has a strict policy against peeking at anything that might be mine, even when it also addressed to him.  In other words, he is typical male-lazy.  *sigh*

Anyway, buried in the stack was a long distance bill from AT&T.  Since my long distance service only charges me if I actually MAKE any long distance calls (and I don't) on my land line, I found this rather... odd.  When I called them on Saturday, the representative said that their policy had changed, and there was no more services like mine. And thus they had "upgraded" me and were now charging me $5/month, plus fees.  And had been doing so for months.  No notification, no nothing.  I basically said that they were going to lose me as a customer, and hung up.  I managed to restrain my foul language until after I hung up.

So today, I went searching for other long distance services.  Oddly, they hide rather well.  It took me two hours to find any options that were not packaged with 10 other things for which I am already paying someone else.   It was only after I went back to the AT&T local site looking for my options that they provided a list of possible long distance services.  I found one with no monthly fee, called them and immediately transferred.

As a courtesy, I called AT&T back and told them I was transferring today.  The nice guy with the Indian accent asked me why.  I explained, and he offered to have the last three months of fees removed from my bill.  I accepted (hey, not stupid!), and thus only owe $0.49.
