About Last Night
Dec. 5th, 2006 07:30 amI was hungry. This generally happens at regular intervals, but lunch had been three slices of cheese (no other protein being easily available) so it was a bit more urgent than is usually the case. So I decided dinner was in order, and not in the undependable hotel restaurant. There was an Indian restaurant nearby that I had tried before. Easy walking distance, thus I could have a glass of wine.
I packed my coat pockets with PDA (electronic books), wallet, and a real paper book.
At the restaurant, I was ushered to a seat when I heard my name. Two of my students were sitting at the next table and invited me to join them. I felt I could not refuse, and so sat down, trying to balance my book discretely in my lap.
It was an interesting dinner. Christine is from south France. James is from the Dublin area of Ireland, but gave hints that he spends a lot of time in Amsterdam. The other guy was from Pakistan (not my class, thus I don't remember his name), but currently living in Switzerland. James asked me about the brouhaha over the US midterm elections, and we compared local politics worldwide.
Wow. I felt very... international.
