Going to King John's castle
Dec. 3rd, 2006 08:42 amAt last, I have been to King John's castle. I have been trying to go see it for about two years, on every trip to Limerick. But something else would always come up. But not this time! This time,
My concern now is that I do not know what is left to see. I've been to the Cliffs of Mohr, Hunt's museum, King John's castle, Adare, Bunratty castle.... What else is there to see?!
I went out in the slight drizzle... Well, I knew it was precipitating because I saw it from my hotel window. What I didn't realize from so many stories up was that the wind is a separate and larger concern. Standing in the lobby, I saw people standing outside with their hair going in truly odd directions. I tied my hair down with a lovely new scarf from Scotland and gloated all the way to the castle. I was reasonably warm and... ok, it was windy, but not too bad! The walk took about 40 minutes in 40-50 degree weak sunshine.
The tour was an indoor/outdoor one, at one point spanning the top of one of the castle walls. When I returned indoors, I discovered that the wind had actually torn the otherwise sturdy-appearing leaflet they had given me at the door to guide me through the castle. Not out of my hand, but you can tell where I was gripping it. Ok, I'd felt a bit shaky up there, but that could have been just my fear of heights.
The walk back to the hotel, I went through the center of town -- King John's castle and my hotel are both on the river. I could have just followed the river, but decided that the center of town was more interesting and a bit more sheltered from the wind. But I had to return to the river's edge to enter the hotel. At one point, about 5 feet from the hotel wall, I had to stop and grab a river-edge post to keep from being swept off of my feet. Websites claim that the wind is only in the 43mph range, but I think it periodically gusts higher than that.
It was kinda scary. I've decided to spend the rest of my day in my hotel. Adventure: done
