Week 1: Houston
May. 24th, 2017 08:05 amHouston as a place to teach in late May has a lot to recommend it. It has been raining and overcast, so the temperature has not reached broiling. My first thought on stepping outside has NOT been how to most quickly get back inside with air conditioning. So that is nice.
Plus Houston is a relatively quick drive for me. Being able to drive to the site has been a rare luxury. No claustrophobic plane! Extra shoes! I brought TWO coolers! Food and drink and ice packs. The customer picked me a nice hotel, so I had a full size frig and freezer to keep my ice packs cold every day. Ah, I will miss those ice packs and coolers in the weeks ahead.
My first morning was very exciting.... A little TOO exciting as these things go. This is a formal training faculty, with student computers. None of which has the absolutely critical software installed. So Monday morning involved a great deal of running around and phone calls and getting licenses and installing. Me, a student and the building IT guy... 20 student computers... It was crazy. But we finished just as the wave of students walked in the door. Whew! THIS is why I arrive early onsite especially for the first day of every class. I never know what I am going to walk into!
On the down side, I either have a cold nibbling at the edges of my allergy medication, or I am violently allergic to something here in Houston. Monday night I couldn't sleep for the nasal pain. Last night I took a long really hot bath to loosen things up. Slept fine. Woke this morning with a very very persistent headache that even my wonderful allergy medication only dulls the edges of. If it is truly allergies, hopefully driving home tonight will put me out of range.
