This last week I traveled to California for a grueling marathon of customer meetings. The customer was great. The customer was friendly, helpful, wonderful. My coworkers were exhausting. We had one rental car between the four of us. The guy driving is the most assertive of us... and has no compunction about dragging us out to late dinners EVERY NIGHT. My shortest workday was 11.5 hours. It was exhausting. Oh, and I'm not just implying "they kidnapped me and would not let me go back to the hotel to sleep," I'm SAYING it. They would not let me out. They would not drop me off. And there was no warning until AFTER I was in the car... My choices shrank to "go along with it" or "Jump out at the next stop light and loose my backpack and computer." No, not every night. But several of the nights it was like that.

Learning lesson: Next time? Get my own rental car. Which I'm sure will just go over SWELL with the rest of the company. *sigh* No, I can tell it will not go well at all if I attempt to get my own rental car. Gaah. New reason to HATE travel...

So that was my week....

T put me on a plane Sunday and then hopped on a plane himself last Thursday. To join his family at a funeral. T's sister and dad joined T on the trip to T's maternal aunt's funeral. They stayed at the local 1st cousins' houses.

I got home late Friday night, then picked up T at the airport Sunday morning. He waited until we got home to tell me that he had not returned in the original condition.

Injuries:

  • He has a nasty scrape just below one knee. Blood everywhere! Preventing it from bleeding all over his clothes, the car and everything in vague range was a huge challenge. His cousins made a very serious first aid run after the incident. I can tell because T brought home the boxes of stuff they bought.

  • Under the scrape is a bruise. He stiffens up after a few minutes of sitting.

  • He wrenched his shoulder on that side. I caught him rubbing it several times after I picked him up at the airport.

What caused this? His sister. She decided that it would be funny to push him into the surf. Which really meant pushing him onto underwater rocks. While he was wearing normal clothes, shoes, and a full range of typical modern electronics. Only luck (landing with his electronics "up") kept this from being a very very technology-expensive incident as well as bloody, smelly and filthy.

T didn't kill or even hurt her. He managed to squelch the urges quickly. Not worth it. But he was really grateful I was not there. I'm so pissed about it.... I should REALLY not see my sister-in-law for a long while. Like a year. Possibly two.

T's read on the extended family's reaction was: WTF?!!!

I don't know your relationship with your boss, but I would be firing a strong note to him explaining how your co-workers' treatment of you was unacceptable and that you will not put yourself in that situation again. He can either allow you your own rental car or he can never assign you with those coworkers again.

And regarding the other. Yeah - WTF??
