cutting the cord
Jun. 4th, 2016 07:51 pmWe finally did it! We cut the cord. No more cable.
We followed in the footsteps of friends, with an initial investment in
We then debated on how many times the customer service would try to talk us into not turning it off. It was a drinking game. 5 attempts at up-sales. 13 minutes from the time the first human answed the phone to accept that we wanted it OFF and we want to STOP PAYING FOREVER.
I wanted to be truthful and say that the reason we are turning it off is because the price has more than doubled over the last few years without any improvement in channels or service. But T insisted that such truth would only lead to more and more longwinded offers. He claimed we are moving in the next 6 months, as if that is a reason they could not argue with.
So the next day our home phone got 4 phone calls from a mysterious 888 number. Very persistent, this robot caller, as usually they only call twice a day from the same number. One of the calls came in while I was presenting to a customer in a webex. Very embarrassing. But the answering machine recorded a robot voice that apologized for the cable company not being able to connect us with a representative, and committing to calling us day and night for every reason imaginable. Promotions. Advertising. Services available in our area. A company truck driving nearby. ?!?! I blocked the number. We'll see what happens next.

- Channelmaster DVR
- A cheap antennae that is often ordered with Channelmaster
- A powered antenne (turned out to be too strong, so we went back to the cheaper one)
- The largest exteneral hard drive T could find
