Is this a sign of what is to come?
Feb. 4th, 2016 03:11 pmMy (living) brother emailed about lunchtime that our 1st cousin once removed had died. She lived a few hours away and had been sick for a while. Cancer. We were expecting it.
Five minutes ago I got a series of text messages from a strange number with the viewing, funeral and reception information. I appreciate the attention. I appreciate the details when I am not close to the family and am quite sure that her son (who my brother said is taking care of things) has no idea who I am. But TEXTING?!?! Really?!
My first response (which, yes, I quelled, because I do have SOME filters, in spite of what my friends and family say) was "You must be a millennial. Because who else would text this kind of information?!"
When my brother died (yes, less than a month ago) I CALLED the key members of my family who have been verbally and intensely involved. Then I sent out a general email to the same email list I had been sending updates to. I don't think I texted a single person a notification of his death. Certainly not a cold text (As part of a continuing text conversation, perhaps).
I am probably being overly sensitive. It just felt realy.... strange. Bizarre.
In the future will I be getting many messages like this from numbers I've never seen?
Update: My brother did not get a text with the funeral information. The phone number the cousin had for him? Doesn't accept texts.

Date: 2016-02-04 09:31 pm (UTC)For whatever poor soul was assigned the chore, I feel some pity. I'm extrapolating that someone else gave that person a list of numbers and said "send this," and the person doing the sending didn't have the fortitude to say "this is a horrible way to communicate." Ah, Ms. Post, how I miss you now.
