a tech toy and a famous person

indigo_rose99Yesterday T and I tried out our new toy for travel, a TomTom Navigator 5 to be used with my Treo 650. The installation was a complete pain and took me many long hours last week. However, I got it working and am thrilled with the results. I say that, and then I'll say that it refused to take us directly to Ardath Mayhar's actual house, because she lives in the middle of the piney woods of East Texas. Oddly, the maps don't seem to have that kind of detail. But it took us close enough.
I was amused that the time estimate on how long it would take to get to her place was hours over the truth. But I really liked the constant updating of the estimate, based on our location. Very cool. I wonder how they came up with these time estimates. Are they basing it on 55mph? Shouldn't they include actual speed limit of the roads? Do they anticipate that people do not actually drive the speed limit?
I could wish that it was more in tune with changes to local roads -- I live in an area with very heavy road construction. Most of the roads around my house it does not recognize, even the ones that have been around for more than a year. But then, neither does Mapsco. *shrug*
Visiting Ardath was a pleasure. We should have done it sooner. It amuses me that I know someone famous, but it is comforting to me that she can tell me stories of my parents. I don't think that I have ever met someone who travels so much... yet only leaves her house to drive for groceries once a month.
