the birthday week
Nov. 24th, 2014 09:38 amIt was the week of our birthdays.
This was my year, as it is an odd birthday (I made sure T gets the even birthday years. 30. 40. 50.... Sneaky, sneaky me.) I chose the celebration.
On T's day, we both took off from work. We didn't go to the gym (!!), we had meals with friends, and spent the entire day wandering the city during weekday hours. It was lovely. He was planning to hit Amy's ice cream midafternoon, but it turned out they were giving out free ice cream at 3pm. We made it to a store at 3:06pm and joined a line. Chocolate maple walnut! Woo hoo!
On my day, I rented a movie theatre (with food) and we all watched Vibes. Though I had seen it so many times I could almost quote along (a feat I am generally unable to manage, no matter how many times I see a movie), I had never seen it on the big screen. Ecuador is really beautiful! It was as funny as I remember. The costumes on Cindy Lauper were hilarious. And about half the audience had never seen it! It was a win.
Then a bunch of us went to an old fashioned pin ball venu. With all of the old arcade games. I played a lot of Centipede! It was fabulous. And I saw Marble Madness (which I used to be pretty good at, back in the 80s), but had not seen since then. I loved getting on the machines that let us race each other.
In some ways, the best part of the day for me was seeing people I don't get to see very often. B & G had come down from DFW to celebrate their wedding. They were thrilled to see vibes. We had not seen B in at least a year and a half. Plus my family friend J also drove down from the DFW area. It was awesome to hang out with him and just talk. He didn't know what to give me (your presence!!!) and then ended up giving me his mom's memoir, which he had just found. Which is a gift that no one else would consider giving me and means a tremendous amount to me. What price memories?
It was a good week.
