castle & history & cool things
Oct. 6th, 2006 08:00 pmT & I walked up a mountain to see a castle today. Edinburgh Castle, specifically. It is pretty central to the city, and pleasantly hard to miss when wandering about. I'm sure that the walk up counted as "exercise."
There was so much history that we would take five steps forward inside the castle and the audio track would jump forward or back 100 years or more. There were parts where we could stand and see portions that had been built during wildly different eras.
My favorite bit was when we were going to see Scotland Honours (a crown, a sword, a septer, and the Stone of Destiny). Just outside the room that held them on display was a long bannister/table. It had braille tablets and stone replicas of the key items (not the Stone). I thought that was so cool! Blind people and children can feel up the valuable items without doing any damage. Very nice.
