Any other day...
Dec. 20th, 2013 07:00 amFriday morning starts like any other day. My alarm goes off at 3:15am.... I do not discover the smell of cigarette smoke and secret ashes as I climb the stairs for exercise. On my drive to work, I work on my list of things to pack in each bag.
Evidently the airport I'm flying out of is dubious. Known for the thefts from checked luggage. All valuables need to be carry-on. BUT my first flight is to Tokyo on All Nippon airlines, and their carry-on policy is NOT friendly. I can have a carry-on and a personal item... But only if the combined weight (yes, for both pieces together!) is less than 25lbs! No, I'm not kidding. And yes, of course my backpack with all of my electronics usually comes in at about 35lbs. *sigh* I'm trying to think of ways to invent new huge pockets on my body without making me either too cold or too hot.
*sigh* And the hard decisions. I doubt the thieves will be interested in my paper instructor notes. But they may well decide that my Tilly hat is a valuable addition to their modern lifestyle. And items like the Tilly... I cannot put them ALL in my backpack and pockets, much as I would love to.
On my way here, the first two flights were United. No one fought me on having a carryon and a backpack. Until I got to the Tokyo airport. When a nice young lady did her BEST to insist that I had two carryons and she was going to check one of them. I was rude and more persistent than her. "One carryon. One personal item." I'm pretty sure she could not understand "personal item." She kept pointing to my backpack and insisting that it needed to be checked. That was NOT going to happen. I was walking a fine line between her calling over security and me actually making sure the minimum I needed to teach the first day arrived with me. I won, but I suspect it was a close thing. We gaijin are so rude...
But on the way back, that is unlikely to work. I have found in the past that if I fight them taking my carryon, I will end up being told that my backpack is too heavy and I cannot have IT! *froth at mouth while hefting my invisible axe*
*grr* They pretend that our checked luggage is in good hands. But I know the truth. The small valuables will be stolen. 20% of the time (my personal records, from my flights where I checked luggage), my checked luggage will be lost. And there is an excellent chance that their abuse of my checked luggage will destroy it. I had to have my carryon repaired recently from that very thing. They shove, toss, slam, and cram checked luggage together in a way that I would never do if it was in my careful hands. *glare at airlines* And then when it arrives in pieces? Oh, there is nothing they can do about it. Lost items are not their problem, not their fault. *grrr*
I hate flying. And people.
Perhaps this is a bad attitude to have as I start my last day of class.
