Security and USB
Dec. 3rd, 2013 09:00 amIn all my travels I have never seen a country more obsessed with security. There are armed guards everywhere!
To drive to the plant in the morning requires multiple checkpoints, showing of paperwork, and at one point my driver opens the (empty) trunk and a security person opens the back door and peers in at me. I cannot decide if it is paranoia or an attempt to provide many low-skill jobs.
Inside the plant, it gets more strange. I was asked for my laptop tag number in advance, and told not to bring any usb memory keys. I went a step farther and put all cables that could connect a device to my laptop in the hotel safe.
But there was an upset yesterday because the security guy did not tape over all of my USB ports. Tape over! I pointed to the USB ports in question, occupied with mice as they typically are in the middle of class. "Um... why do you care? If you are worried about me being on the guest wireless, I need my mice more than I need the wireless..." Now I have magic paperwork that lets me (reluctantly) keep my uncovered USB ports.
