Scotland in March
Apr. 1st, 2013 11:00 amScotland was lovely. Bitterly cold with a wind that went through layer after layer of my carefully planned clothing. It even gently snowed the entire weekend we were there.
The wedding itself was also lovely. Lots of audience participation and good people stories.
I didn't realize until later how much I dislike the repeated references to God in most wedding (and other major events) services.... This is a fault in me, not the ceremonies. My instinctual response is that everyone who made this choice (with the possible exception of my college roommate B, who I SAW had these deep religious feelings, and thus was ok seeing them in her funeral) is a complete hypocrite and I feel deeply uncomfortable participating in such lies. So the secular humanist wedding ceremony was formal enough to satisfy my sense of ceremonial accomplishment, and yet personal enough to make me happy.
T and I are really glad we went. Highlights of the trip:

T and I are really glad we went. Highlights of the trip:
- Snow
- realizing that my thickest gloves were not at all warm enough. Searching for liners to fit under them.
- Arranging for T to get a new kilt. He has skinnied out of his old one.
- The wedding ceremony itself
- Watching the precocious 5-year-old of the groom's brother. And seeing the groom's brother as a father. My mind insists that he is about 8 years old, so this was a mind blower.
- Hot made to order breakfast with haggis at our hotel.
- Watching movies on the flight back. Cloud Atlas. Both of us disliked it, but it was fun debating what was meant, and which actors played the different characters.
