Tools required for hanging art, 1986:
  • My hammer
  • My small box of hanging items -- hooks, nails, etc.
  • (optional, depending on the height of the item being hung) a chair to stand on
Tools required for hanging art, 2006:
  • My hammer (amazingly, still the same hammer)
  • My small box of hanging items (also still the same box, now much depleted)
  • My small ladder (T insisted that he didn't need one, but I require one to take things on and off of top shelves in the closet. Thus, it is my ladder.  He sometimes borrows it.)
  • My level (Many gifts of tools, and I couldn't find his level. I'm sure he has at least five.)
  • a pencil (for marking on the wall)
  • an eraser (for erasing marks on the wall)
  • My very nice measuring tape (ordinarily used by my students during classroom activities)
  • a calculator
  • A pad of post-it notes to write down all of the lengths, widths, measurements, and calculations
Why all the additional tools now, you ask?  I have, in fact, not become more anal about hanging art.  Really.  It is my significant other.  This is one of the rare areas where he channels his engineer father.  He insists on every piece of art being... leveled.  Centered.  Symmetric.  Thus, the level, the calculator, the endless measurements... *sigh*  And you know?  *amused look* I bet when he comes home he is going to wage an internal battle against taking down the two pieces of art I have now spent 3 hours hanging and rehanging them... properly.
