I would like to be legal and honest.

I am a big fan of the library because there are many many books I would like to read once, but am not willing to pay for. If it was easier to get them online, I might pay 50 cents for these books. I will NEVER pay more than a $1.

I am a big fan of half price books. A lot of books go out of print or are difficult to find. Or, again, I am not willing to pay $8 for it, but might be willing to pay $4.

In fact, my price point is about $5-$6 for most books. I am not willing to pay more than that for my pleasure reading.

I will admit that there are rare cases I am willing to pay more. Baen.com as successfully marketed to me. I am evidently willing to pay $15 to get a book I want THREE MONTHS EARLY. It is an Advance Reader Copy, with all of the mistakes. But that is OK, for some books, the Getting It Early part is the important bit. If I wait the 3 months, I could pay the usual $5-$6.

These days, I prefer to read on my android phone.  I found an app that scrolls the book for me when my hands are busy (like at the gym) and will even read to me using Text To Speech (TTS). I love this app, and really do not want to read books in any application that does not scroll or read to me.

My local library has electronic book checkout. But I only get the book for 2 or 3 weeks, it is REALLY painful to download, and (this is the deal breaker) I can only read it in their proprietary app. And their app does not scroll or have TTS.

I have tried to buy electronic copies of my favorite books as a gift for friends... During the purchasing process ($8 for a book that had been out for 5+ years?!), the website demanded the unique key code on their reader/phone. I don't know that! I don't HAVE their reader/phone! It is a *&#$(*!! gift! I ended up pirating the book and writing an apology to the author.

Based on her response (It is ok, just recommend me.), I strongly recommend Eileen Wilkes, particularly the Lupi series. Paranormal romance adventure in an alternate world. The main character is an FBI agent who spends most of her time solving murders.

I am not willing to pay $25 or more for an electronic copy of a book that I can then only read in their proprietary app (no scrolling, no TTS). I feel strongly that publishers are DRIVING me to piracy. The books are difficult to buy, the price is hugely inflated, and practically impossible to read once I do purchase them!

In many cases, I would prefer to just Paypal some money to the author, if that were possible. I want authors to keep writing. I want to encourage and even pay them. I recognize the editing of publishers as a valuable contribution to many of my favorite authors (Laurell K Hamilton, for instance, I think got too famous for an editor to make changes. And the quality of the more recent books have suffered...). But most publishers seem to have a business model that will steer me away from giving them my money.

Thank you for the recommendation of Wilkes. I've got On the Prowl but haven't pursued her stories any further. But now.... That's an awesome pair of reasons for me to chase it down: you liked it enough to get it as a gift, and then liked it enough to go through the hassle of writing the author, etc.
