Yesterday I wound up work a bit early and headed downstairs at 3:45pm to get a snack and my keys. I could actually be on time leaving the house for the gym! I stepped into the kitchen into... water. And I don't mean my foot was damp. I mean I caused a wave by stepping into it.

The carpet had slowed the spread of the water. But it covered EVERYTHING in the kitchen. EVERYTHING. T later pointed out to me that it was coming through the walls and exiting out the garage. The water line on the recycle bin was about 2 inches. The water line on the bookshelf (farther from the washer we think caused this) was only about a half inch.

First there was the screaming at phones and grabbing every dry towel-like item I could lay hands on. When T came home I was kneeling in the water and bailing out the sliding glass door. The water line was just barely below the edge of the glass door sill... My first words to T were, "Please tell me you have some sort of technology that will do this more efficiently."  He did.

Three hours of hard labor by both of us, a wet-dry vac, a rented carpet shampooer and every dry towel we own... It is mostly dry. We turned the AC to "much colder" are still running the fan to dry the carpet. I hurt from hips to elbows.

You know those pieces of furniture you never move? We moved those. T talked me out of moving the stove, frig, washer or dryer. I still think we should have moved the washer and dryer.

And of course it wasn't just WATER. It was SOAPY water. Ugh. I was actually slipping while on hands and knees to get behind and to the back of things. Slipping!

T is now disgusted with Sears, from whom we bought this washer just a few months ago. First, they did not give us or install the metal hoses he purchased. Second, their "emergency service" isn't. They offered to come today from 10am-4pm when we both have meetings from noon to 2pm. The fastest they can come is Wednesday. Really? This is what you tell us as we are continuing to wipe up water from behind the shoe shelf and underneath the canned food? T took a picture of the very small laundry load (they accused us of overloading the washer). *sigh*

All I can be grateful for is that this happened when it is NOT 105F outside. Humidity and molding carpets are a danger, but at least it is not so hot.
