Most Beautiful Port Ever.
The tour was mildly disappointing. I would recommend next time just stepping off the cruise ship with a guidebook. But we probably saw more than you could alone.
I mentioned my ignorance about Malta at dinner last night and was blown away by the vehemence of my English table mates. Their stories were more recent and interesting than our guide's. Their parents lived through the 2nd world war, and remember when Malta was a brave, critical, and utterly bombed out island base. One tablemate's father was stationed here. She said that the bombing was so continuous that he was ALWAYS on alert. No sleeping. She said he had a picture of the intact Opera House. It is a bombed out shell, even today. I walked through it.
One tablemate talked about how the island inhabitants were starving and the drastic lengths (mostly futile) to which the English tried to deliver supplies. They were firm in "Malta was never captured."
