Mom and the Tangerine Mousse recipe
Jul. 21st, 2007 10:30 amI don't know what is on your list of things in life you regret doing, or regret failing to do. But my list has "Ask Mom for a paper and electronic copy of all of her recipies. All of them, no matter how dubious." It has long been too late. She is gone, my father is gone, the house is gone.... All I have is a subset of her recipies, and it does not include the tangerine mousse.
I have vivid memories of eating it. I remember that she was proud of the recipe -- it must not have contained any actual sugar, and no fat. I remember that in all of my kid snobbery, I still liked it. I remember that it was one of those recipies that you had to make and immediately eat. If you let it sit, the acid in the tangerines would eat unattractive holes in the primarily-milk base. I remember that she would sometimes make it, and store the finished product in the freezer to eat later. It still tasted just as good partially frozen -- like very light ice cream. I remember that the big ingredients were Milnot (a milk concentrate in a can) and frozen tangerine concentrate. I have no idea of any other ingredients, or the order in which she did the steps to make it.
Today is the day I celebrate Mom by trying to recreate this recipe.
