on the long hop
Aug. 15th, 2010 09:27 amThe couple behind me on the plane described their nightmare transfer between planes in Chicago. They barely made the plane.
My transfer went quite well. Two bathroom breaks, plenty of time for the slow security line for international terminal, and I arrived at the gate as my row was boarding. Sweet!
Oddly, except for words like "horrible!" and "terrible!", their description of every step along the way exactly matched mine.
They sound like new travelers. *laugh* It is all in the expectations.

Date: 2010-08-15 03:50 pm (UTC)since i travel pretty much every week, almost nothing fazes me anymore. flight delay? more time to surf the internet / read my ebooks. looking bad for my connection? call the elite line, have them protect me on another flight. stranded at the airport? call travel, have them find me the closest available hotel. turbulence? if the flight attendant doesn't look worried, i'm not worried. i've been dropped into a big machine; it'll spit me out the other end eventually, and there's not a lot i can do to influence the workings, just try to navigate it as best i can.
he, on the other hand, gets really anxious when anything out of the ordinary happens. physical reaction - heart rate increases, blood pressure goes up... i suggested he try biofeedback / rhythmic deep breathing to get his body under control, which will presumably help settle his mental state. (it's really hard to stay agitated if you're focusing on breathing deeply and counting your breaths.) i totally understand the reaction - i was the same way when i started traveling, and a white-knuckle flier to boot - but it's interesting to see how differently i see things now...
