I am once again traveling, this time within the US. My chosen hotel had the most stars on Google Maps of any hotel within 10 minutes of my work destination. Which, given the few things that were said in the reviews, perhaps may be less of a good thing than you might think.
All signs are quoted from memory, and thus may not represent the actual text of the sign.
What was I thinking?! (WWIT): When I first drove up to the hotel, I noticed two gang-like persons standing outside. They did not look out of place in the area.
Oh, it's not so bad (OINSB): Inside I discovered that I have free wi-fi with the hotel room. Sweet!
WWIT: Sign behind the hotel check-in guy, "No public phone. No public bathroom."
OINSB: The hallway was clean. In typical hotel colors. No obvious trash or scary animals.
WWIT: Another sign behind the check-in guy, "Guests paying with cash must..." There are guests who pay with only cash?! What kind of hotel IS this?!
OINSB: The hotel room has a small frig. Score!
WWIT: As I waited for the elevator, another sign, "We understand with the rolling blackouts in California that guests may not wish to take the elevator."
OINSB: The hotel room has a small microwave. Score!
WWIT: In the stairway, "According to California law [...] parts of this hotel are toxic to humans. For more details, check with the front desk." *gulp* Toxic? Are we talking asbestos?!
OINSB: My commute to and from work takes 10 minutes and the roads are empty.
WWIT: Even at 5pm, the roads are empty. I have to imagine that all of the rush hour drivers are carefully avoiding these roads. As I look in the other cars, I realize that I am the best dressed Caucasian person I can see. Ok, we can put some "only" words into that last sentence....
WWIT: My fellow hotel-goers seem to be... um... Not business travelers. I'm not quite sure how to describe them without sounding terribly biased. They dress like... they have very low-status, low-income jobs. If they have jobs at all.
My students tell me that if the facility was not in the WORST POSSIBLE PART OF TOWN then the company could not afford the truly lovely waterfront facility. They talk about how difficult it is to bike to work while avoiding the really terribly unsafe area around the building. They seem to think that my hotel is not in the center of the bad part of town... just on the edge. They recommend a longer commute from my hotel for my next trip.
I'm checking out now.
