So I'm soaking in the bathtub in epsum salts and the hottest water I can bear.  Tomorrow night, no tub.

I hear a knock.  It is 8:40pm and I should be asleep.  Must be next door.  Sure sounds loud...

Then my hotel room door opens.

Yes, really.

I was behind the bathroom door, so he saw just my possessions.   I said, "ExCUSE ME?!"

It took 20 minutes of fruitlessly searching for a front desk phone number (during which time my temper went from 'huh?' to'WTF!?!?!') before I called room service and asked to be transferred.

The story was a very apologetic "wrong room" with no suggestions for future preventions.  I have the door locked, a do-not-disturb sign on, and something that will be loud if knocked over.

Would it have been better or significantly worse if the same knock had caught me in bed?  ...Worse, I think.

I'm now very jumpily trying to sleep.

i've been on the other end of that encounter; a couple years ago, i let myself into a hotel room... and the occupant, a middle-aged business man, was quite surprised! fortunately, he was also a) fully clothed and b) not engaging in anything unseemly at the time. we had an awkward moment of me going OMG and him going OMG and me apologizing a bunch and backing out to go ask the front desk to find me a new room. (bed preference: unoccupied.)
