Parting is Such Sorrow
Jan. 30th, 2010 02:32 pmI often talk about my friend and neighbor, B. I met him about 10 years ago as a coworker and discovered that he lived a block from our (then new) house and shares all of T&my hobbies - gaming, ballroom dancing, comics, SF books, rollerblading, etc. A higher power created the perfect friend for us and plopped him right next door.
For many years now T and I have been B's favorite house and cat sitters during his travels, in spite of the many good stories we got out of it. When we met him, he had been living in his house for five years and yet his walls were completely bare. We covered his walls with silly art, decorated his bathrooms (T chose a Sponge Bob theme, I went with rubber duckies), put glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling of his entire first floor, pranced metal flamingos in patterns through his lawn, left tiny plastic flamingos in patterns around his house, and much, much more. We had a lot of time to think of new ways to make him wonder what we had done to his house This Time.
After six months of being laid off, B got a job 3 hours away. Last night I fed him lasagna, vege paella, and kale with almonds and apples as we watched the final Dollhouse episode. Today we waved him off. He starts the new job Monday. I will miss his company, us planning house mischief and his cat.
