Usually I do not think about missing a high school biology class or the many science classes I chose not to take in college.

But today...  If I stab my hand with a bit over 1/4 inch of knife tip, does it matter WHERE I stab myself?  Are there some points on the hand that I should be more worried about?  I take blood running down the sink mostly as annoying (how to explain it to T this time?).  But which cuts should I be concerned I actually sliced through something important?

If my hand continues to work, that is a good sign, right?

If I had those high school and college biology classes, would I know the answers about slicing up my hands?

First aid classes would be good.

1) "biology" and "knife" should not be tags of the same entry. It's cute the first time and all, but now you've been there, done that.

2) I recommend a first aid class over a biology class. Biology classes tend not to be quite as good on these sorts of specifics.

3) The part of the wrist where you take your pulse is probably not idea for stabbing, though if you were able to stop the blood, that's a good thing. As far as vital nerves, bone parts, tendons, etc., I am ignorant. Does T's employer have a nurseline?

4) Next time, stab yourself in the part of the hand that is wearing a glove with a thickness of at least 1/2 inch.

I assume that's a rhetorical question, but the answer is: yes, it definitely makes a difference. When stabbing your hand, make sure to avoid tendons and larger blood vessels. (Although, there are no blood vessels in the hand itself that are usually considered "large". I don't think you can bleed out from a 1/4" deep hand wound. Your wrist might be different story, though, so please limit your stabbing to your hand.)

If my hand continues to work, that is a good sign, right?

YES! Check for movement and lack of pain while moving each of your digits.

If I had those high school and college biology classes, would I know the answers about slicing up my hands?

Probably not. Talking about small cuts (1/4" deep stabbing) you probably need an anatomy book to really understand what's at risk rather than a high school general biology book.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] livingdeb's suggestion for a first aid class. Oh, and it may be obvious, but overall it would be better if you would please stop stabbing and slicing yourself!

*hug*

Not exactly a rhetorical question. No swelling, no red streaks, full movement. It does hurt a surprising amount with movement, though, which disturbs me.

I like your first aid class suggestions. I'll look into that.

I try to not cut or stab myself. I have the onion holder that T bought (kinda looks like a hair comb, with pointy ends) to keep my fingers away from the knife. I've been wearing the no-cut glove to cut meat and other things the onion holder doesn't work on. But I was just doing dishes this time.... *innocent look*

Were you around in the kitchen the weekend the hordes MCSC subset descended on our house for the discussion about home I'm particular about silverware orientation in the dishwasher basket? Everything goes useful end up to allow them to spread out for maximum cleaning ... except sharp knives. They go pointy end down. This comes from the experience of reaching into the basket and ending up with a knife point in my palm.

I don't remember this discussion, but I could have phased it out. It sounds exactly like T's "discussion" on the same point. *sigh* But it was a NEW knife! Pretty and expensive and sharp and I didn't want to dull the tip by putting it in a plastic basket.

This has not reduced T's rant on the subject, though. *resigned sigh*

Easy question: which is more valuable, a knife or a hand?

Harder but still easy question: Is that true if you have only one good knife but two good hands?

Here's a much harder question: Which is more annoying, dealing with surprise cuts occasionally or hand-washing your nice knives after every use?

Does it hurt only at the point/area of the wound? Or is there pain radiating or referring to other areas? I would expect pain at the wound, but I would also expect that to lessen with healing time. Any trouble with grip strength or additional pain when holding something?

It hurts in the injury point, the webbing between my thumb and first finger.

Is it radiating or referring? Um.... I'm not sure. I have spent a large chunk of time in the past three days rolling pennies and found myself with frequent hand cramps. How much of my current hand pain is from the knife, and how much is from repetitive motion? *bewildered shrug*

No grip strength problems, and no additional pain when holding anything. Thanks for asking, because you are making me feel better that there is none.

Fortunately, your hand will grow back. Beautiful new knives, not so much. So, it should never, never, never go in the dishwasher! Immediately after using it, hand wash it carefully, wipe it dry, and put it back in the knife block.
