Marriage license
Jul. 7th, 2009 09:19 pmHave you done anything with your marriage license since you got it? Ever been required to produce it for any reason?
I have. Just now. T's company told us last year that only family members without their own insurance could claim his insurance. Fine. I don't have insurance, being self employed. Then a few weeks ago we got a letter. It had an "amnesty date." We could withdraw my name from his insurance, with no penalty. But if they discovered that I somehow don't DESERVE the insurance.... *shrug* Fine. We ignored it.
Then yesterday there was another letter. We must prove our relationship. The required documents include our marriage license and the front page of our most recent tax return. Since our license resides in the safety deposit box, getting their proof required time and gas and planning. In general, it was a pain in the ass. I am not sure that T could have done it while still keeping regular work hours.
So, yes, many years ago, we got married. And now we file a joint tax return from the same address.
But if the company has gone THIS far... And the sheer gall of it all is pretty sweeping... If they have gone this far, I cannot imagine his company stopping here. I'm sure the next step is for me to somehow PROVE that I have no other source of insurance. Proof of a negative is So Fun. *sarcasm*
Joy. *more sarcasm*

Date: 2009-07-08 01:57 pm (UTC)hopefully your tax return, showing your self-employed status, would be sufficient for that, too. but it's totally absurd that the company is making you jump through all these hoops in the first place; i wonder whether they discovered an unusually high incidence of insurance fraud, or whether the bean-counters are just running rampant.
