T told me this as I serenly ignored the continuous angry screams of the healthy baby next to us.

Unlike the previous flight when he practically sat on me to keep me from disemboweling the 8 yr old in the row behind us.

Wow. I'll have to keep that in mind the next time my seat is repeatedly kicked and I'm showered in cold macaroni.

OK, I'm not sure I would have treated macaroni quite as calmly. And kicking my seat really pushes my buttons. But just for sheer noise, it Really Helped.

I will have to remember this tactic. It sounds like a winner to me.

oh, yeah. alcohol makes up for a multitude of travel annoyances.

and on a related note...

back when i flew southwest more regularly, i had one connection where my inbound flight was delayed, and i barely caught the outbound leg - which guarantees a middle seat all the way in the back. except that when i boarded the plane, there was a mother with an already-screaming baby in 2A - and both seats next to her were empty. score! i happily sat down in 2C, made faces at the baby for a couple minutes to see whether i could distract him out of his screaming fit (no luck at all, though the mother was almost pathetically appreciative)... and then popped in my etymotics as soon as the flight attendant sat down. the baby just Went Away. i <3 technology.

as far as i could tell, he screamed nonstop for most of the 90-minute flight until he wore himself out and fell asleep at the very end. i got a bunch of work done. and felt really bad for the mom, since there was clearly nothing she could do about it...
