- In Barcelona, pretty much everything of interest is in easy walking or taxi or train access. Forget the tour and read a guidebook.
- In Malta, forget the tour. Take the public bus or walk. Beaches or shopping.
- In Crete, take the tour to the Palace the first time.
- In Monaco, just stay in Monaco. Don't try to go to Nice & Cannes unless you have a LOT more time than a single day. Wander Monaco. See the casino?
- In Naples, take the Pompeii tour and/or wander Naples. Or try to go to Herculaneum (also buried, but by mud and preserved better).
- There is pretty much nothing in Livorno. Take a tour or transportation to Florence.
- In Piraeus, take the tour or transportation to Athens. See the Acropolis, but you might want to check the status of the construction before you leave.
- In Sicily, do you best to stay longer than a few hours. Taormina is a lovely city. Do not rent a car and try to drive yourself.
