Change is bad
May. 9th, 2008 11:40 pmSo we bought new laptops with Vista. Many of the bugs have been ironed out or I have just adjusted. Reluctantly. But one of the bugs is persistent and we could use some ideas.
Anything you can think of would be really helpful. This is driving me slightly batty. And having to boot up two computers to send the simplest email is... annoying now. But what if this problem follows me on the road?
Yes, I do need to test this with someone else's wireless. Will do.
Update: Changing wireless and router had no impact. Contacted AVG directly (since we have paid licenses). They suggested we turn off a variety of things within AVG. Turning off the AVG Linkscanner and AVG Web Shield seems to work. Turning off each by themselves had no impact. Not sure what the long-term AVG suggestion will be.
We are using AVG Internet Security, with the scanning of outgoing emails turned off. The Vista Firewall is turned off (because the AVG one is turned on). This will be of interest once I describe the problem, because Vista and the security software are often blamed.
The problem: We are both using web mail programs -- Aol, Yahoo, gmail, stuff like that. We can send and receive emails. If we wish to send an email with an attachment, the attachment must be txt and less than 15k. Yes, 15k. This is not a limitation of any of the web mail programs.
Right now, if I want to attach any file to an email, I have to go boot up my old XP desktop, and send it via that computer. I'm sneaker-netting all my attachments to it via a memory key. The XP desktop accepts attachments fine. Yes, using the same network connection, the same yahoo and gmail email programs.
I've done internet searches to see if anyone else has this problem. Yes, they do. Everyone says "Oh, it is Norton or xxxx security. Uninstall that and install AVG!" Well, I have AVG, and still have the problem. *sigh*
I thought it might be the wireless... Plugged the laptop into a network cable and tried to attach a 27K txt file to an email. No go. It stalled out just like it always does with such a hideously large file.

Unfortunately, that doesn't fix your wireless headache.
