T's story: So I'm happily working... OK, maybe not happily. Let's just say that I'm working. And my cell phone goes off. My wife says, "Come home RIGHT NOW!!" I recognize that tone of voice. It is the one I used when her mother died. Thoughts flew through my head. Did she total the SLK? Did a relative die? Is the SLK all right? (Yes, I stole from the Simpsons. Sue me.)

I rush home to find my wife with her foot in the sink. Did I mention blood? After ascertaining that my wife was not, indeed, dying, I pretty much figured my plans for the evening had changed.

My story: I first noticed that I had walked into T's knife because my foot felt like it had been stung. Then it was the bright stains on our otherwise pale carpet. I couldn't get to linoleum fast enough.

So I'm mostly naked, bleeding profusely from a foot, and 8 feet of VERY white carpet from a phone.

T said as we left the ER, "You are an expensive date."

so what did you do? levitate across the carpet?

*hug* sorry to hear you had a run-in with a sharp thing. i hope it wasn't too many stitches. *hug*

(also, why was there an open knife on the floor? reminds me of the time [livejournal.com profile] thebroomecloset reached into the back seat of my car to get something out of the footwell and came up with a pincushion hand - my sewing machine had taken a header off the back seat the week before, and i didn't realize it had left behind some souvenirs...)

Sadly, no levitation. I actually did pretty well at keeping the blood to washable surfaces after I made it to the bathroom. It was that initial limping sprint that sprayed it... EVERYWHERE. Places I never stepped. I think I need to just break down and invest in carpet spot remover. *sigh*

Door frame. Two sinks. Bathtub. Bath mat. About a dozen drops spread over 15 feet of carpet. And me. How I got blood all the way up one leg I have no idea.

Happily, no stitches. We think I walked into the tip of the knife. Small entry, head-wound-level quantities of blood. The ER doc seemed convinced I have not sliced anything I'll need later (a tendon, for instance), though he offered an Xray to ensure the knife tip hadn't broken off in my foot. *wince* I declined and took a careful look at the knife when I got home. Looks intact.

I am assuming you are okay now, then?

And the SLK?

How about the carpet?

ER? What happened there?

**

My mom had trouble mopping the kitchen floor this weekend because every time she turned around, there were new spots. Spots of blood. From one of her own feet. She remembered having wiped something off her foot, and that action scratched her foot, apparently more deeply than she had thought, but she never found the piece of glass or whatever it was.

She also burnt her finger when she was trying to fix the vacuum cleaner. Right next to the place where she had cut her finger. I said it's good thing she didn't burn it in the same place, because then the burn blister would have been pre-popped.

I get home and find that my sister also has a big burn blister on one of her fingers.

Okay guys, quit scaring me and be careful!

I'm OK. The SLK is OK. The carpet? I'm not sure. I keep finding more blood spots. At the ER, they told me that I do not need a tetanus booster. Yay! Then they washed it out and started to put a cream on it that I am allergic to (in spite of a big red allergy tape on me). Happily, T stopped them. Yay, T!

I'm trying to figure out what it says about me that the first thought to go through my head after reading this was, "What? Travis wasn't carrying his knife!?"

I'm glad you're okay. Hope it heals before your next hike around a foreign country.

I'm trying to visualize T carrying all of his knives. At once. ...Nope. Still can't visualize it. Where would he put them?

Or perhaps I am thinking of my knives.

Owie!owie!ow!ow!

And then you get to add insult to injury by having to clean the house... argh.

What was a knife doing laying on the floor where it could be hit by a bare or sock clad foot? I have seen your house and I can't imagine that a knife would be left lying on the floor.

Obviously, you have not yet learned how to fly without leaking. First place a hand over the bleeding spot on your foot. Then hover over the carpet quickly on your one remaining foot until you reach a towel that is a dark color. Wrap your foot in said towel.

I know this only works if you think about it before hand but really, there should be more concern here about your foot and less about the carpet. I thought you were moving anyway. Spot remover is a good idea.

I hope you are recovering nicely and won't try anything silly like putting on shoes for a while.

What was the knife doing on the floor? Um... Good question. T blames himself. His knife, and he put it there. And he knows about me and sharp objects. I told him (in defense of my clumsiness) that I missed it for five whole days. I should totally get credit for those!

I discovered as I dripped into the sink (and onto the floor, bathmat and other sink) that we have no dark clean towels that I felt all right bleeding on. None. Anywhere in the house. Scary, huh? I was voting paper towels, but they were a floor away.

T pointed out, in a fair amount of detail, that my priorities (carpet over bleeding foot) are in questionable order. I'm not entirely sure that he is finished with that speech. He keeps adding to it. *rueful smile*

I agree with Travis. It is also important to own at least one towel that you care nothing about. I call them the cat towels in my house. This is the towel that is used to line the bottom of the bag or cage that you take the cat to the vet in. It will also be used if I were to rescue an injured animal. It is certainly not the softest towel in the house but if there is a major spill in the kitchen, it would be the one that I use. My cat towel is light lavender but you can easily find it in the closet because it has rusty looking stains on it. It is also possible to use a white towel if you like to use bleach. I almost never throw out a towel, they are handy even when they have holes in them. Eventually they can be cut up and used as disposable wash cloths for nasty outdoor window cleaning, or getting the grit and mud off your bike. When I used to volunteer at the animal shelter, it was an item we always needed. Old towels to use as blankets for animals or as towels if a dog or cat was dirty and got a wash when it came in.

Ouch! Dave said something about a tetanus shot -- did you end up getting one?

I hope you'e OK and not in too much pain today.

Evidently, I was a year and about two months from having to get a booster tetanus shot. I had one less than 5 years ago. I brought my shot records to the hospital, just to be on the safe side. T & I had no idea what the rules are. And the knife was not exactly rust-free or clean.

I've been poked with sharper sticks. Not so bad if I don't walk on it too long and keep it clean and dry. Thanks!
