It's a smaller world
Jul. 9th, 2006 01:34 amDid you know that there are Yellow Pages in China? I didn't. But there it is, sitting next to me on the desk.
When I lived in Japan in the early 90's for 10 months, I felt very isolated. I would sometimes go barhopping with acquaintances simply for the opportunity to speak to someone in my native language. To communicate with ANYONE. In the general sense, I hate bars. But I felt so cut off... My own face in the mirror began to look strange. My eyes looked big, oddly colored. I remember once going for two entire weeks without speaking to anyone in English. Really cut off.
But here I am... I left Japan less than 12 hours ago. I checked in with my contact to the world (translation: email) from the Japan airport lounge, and here I am doing it again from the desk in my hotel in Xaimen, China. When I traveled in the early 90's, I talked to my own mother once a month. If anyone were awake, I could even talk on Skype (that wasn't a hint, just a comment).
It feels like a much smaller world than it was.
