Let it snow...
Feb. 22nd, 2008 10:13 amPhiladelphia has been chilly. T was horrified when he realized I was not packing a winter coat. But those things are so bulky to carry on planes! And trying to carry one with my travel jacket?! Just too much work. And really, how much time would I spend outdoors? Mostly walking to and from a car, or across a single street. I compromised by packing hat, scarf, gloves, and 180s in my backpack, and changing my usual travel pants for a pair that would work with a 2nd layer under it.
Which I am currently wearing. And wishing I could type through gloves. And thinking about putting on a hat. Not that I'm outside.
See, it snowed two nights ago. It was a lovely light dusting. I thought that was cool. Then last night T called me with the news that the airline had canceled my flight out. *glower* They rebooked me on a flight seven hours later. *roll eyes* Good thing my travel plans are flexible... Not that they asked. Anyway, when I woke up this morning, the world outside my window was completely covered in snow. Covered. A thick layer. And it was still coming down. When I went down to breakfast at my very old-fashioned bed-and-breakfast, people were worried about the trains running on time.
So, anyway. Let me remind you that I am in Philadelphia to help one of my close friends. She needed... Something. Badly. And of the many things that she needed, the only thing I could do for her was clean her apartment. This is True Friendship. And if I love you this much, you already know, so don't pester me to come clean your house.
Anyway, so yesterday as I'm cleaning, I notice that it is steadily getting colder in her place. I put on more clothes, I close the windows... And then I realize that the heat is not on. I tell her when she comes home. She calls her landlord. I spend the night back at my cozy bed-and-breakfast. She swore to me that she has more blankets than any single human could possibly need. Then the snow this morning....
And still no heat in her apartment today. She is at work, and I'm wishing I brought my fingerless gloves. One of her neighbors tells me that they ran out of oil. For the furnace. Thus, it is really cold in here. I actually have a temperature gauge in my luggage (packed, behind me, in anticipation of catching that late flight today), but I'm not sure I want to know. I mean, I can't really do anything about it but make myself tea and put on a hat...

Date: 2008-02-22 05:51 pm (UTC)i hear you on the cleaning. when i went down to my sister's, that's what i did for the first two days, too. personally, i know that when i'm stressed / upset, a cluttered environment is a source of more stress to me... so you're making her space a little easier for her to breathe in. and that can be huge.
also - make snow angels before you go! :)

Date: 2008-02-22 06:20 pm (UTC)I like the snow angel idea, but I'd have to borrow her clothing to do it in. *rueful smile* Mine is SO not waterproof! But she probably wouldn't mind. Knowing her, she'd tell me to go out and do it!
Yeah, "making her space easier for her to breathe in," exactly. That is even the way she sees it. Though last night I had to shove her into her kitchen and bathroom and tell her to look at her lovely walls and decorations after her cat did a Bad Thing on her futon. Looking at her living room just made her tense up. But the kitchen and bathroom look really nice!
